The more we research and interact with young parents, the more we believe how crucial this article is! If you have had, are having, might have, or are thinking about having a child, this is a MUST read.
During the first 1,000 days of life (conception to 2 yrs.), the plasticity of your child’s brain is incredibly high, meaning it's really easy to mold. As your child experiences life, channels form in the brain which create the foundation for mental and emotional health later on. Positive experiences lead to more self confidence, healthier relationships, greater coping abilities, stronger learning habits, and a host of other things that lead to happy contributing members of society.
Damaging experiences can lead to the opposite: trust issues, learning disabilities, low self esteem, etc.
As a child gets older, their brain begins to solidify, and that foundation becomes monumental later on in life. That's why the things below are crucial - especially during the first 1,000 days of life.
6 important things you can do to develop your child's brain.
- Develop a strong relationship with your child by loving and nurturing them.
- Make sure your child is eating healthy.
- Read to your child.
- Create routines around meals, sleep, and family fun.
- Play and cuddle with your child every day.
- Praise your child for accomplishments to build their self-esteem.
*Both parents should be involved in these activities.
Some of these things seem rudimentary and simple, but we cannot stress their importance in raising mentally and emotionally strong kids!
